"A year ago, our financial
planner recommended that it would be a good time for my husband and I
(ages 53 and 52) to apply for long term care insurance. He recommended
that we shop around for agents and companies to get a balanced picture
of what was available. One of those we interviewed was Susan Suben of
Long Term Care Associates, Inc., in Cortland, NY. Despite the long
driving distance from Cortland to Rochester, Susan met with us at our
home a number of times to explain the various companies, policies, and
options available to us. She frequently followed up with us by phone to
ensure that all our questions were answered. She also gave us all the
time we needed to fill out the applications and make our decisions
without pressure. "After many months, we finally submitted our
applications to the company of our choice, John Hancock, and mine was
approved. My husband's, however, was not. He had been recently diagnosed
with ADHD, and his application was denied based on a letter one of his
doctors had submitte. We contacted Susan, whose experience in the
industry helped her to discern the likely source of the
misunderstanding. Susan recommended that we ask the doctor to send an
explanatory letter to John Hancock clarifying her diagnosis. Susan then
filed an appeal with John Hancock, and the denial was overturned. My
husband was accepted for insurance coverage, and in addition, we
received a spousal discount! "We are grateful for Susan's
comprehensive knowledge of her subject and her steadfast perseverance on
our behalf. Now we are both covered, and happily by the same company,
which will make our lives much simpler in the future should we ever need
to use our long term care insurance coverage."
